We looked for a safer alternative way to ride between Dover and Deal that avoids the A258. This one follows quiet downland lanes past three country pubs and two railway stations.
Do you support this route? Could you suggest improvements?

It was already in the 2008 District Cycling Plan...
Cyclists in the local Cycle Forum believe it's now vital to respond to recent road deaths by offering leisure cyclists a clearly signed safer alternative to the lethal hazards of the A258 Dover-Deal Road. The A258 is too narrow for busy fast-moving traffic to pass cyclists safely.
That's why our proposals (above) include "diversion" signs at Ringwould and Martin junctions to offer any cyclists on the main road an "escape route" to complete their journey via quieter lanes. Click to view this route which, though never signed, was promoted as "the Skylark Trail" on a tourist leaflet produced 8 years ago by Dover, Deal and Sandwich Town Councils. Click to see leaflet.

Your comments:
Gary Holmes, Vice-chair of Deal Tri writes:
I commute via this route 3 or 4 times each week joining at Ringwould. I can confirm it is mostly traffic free and a pleasant ride, the only hazards being the accumulation of gravel and mud from the lane banks and farms. However these are insignificant compared to the A258.
I can confirm that Deal Tri Club fully support the promotion and establishment of this route.
Once again thank you for your efforts
Wallace Murray says:
I support this proposal wholeheartedly. Whilst one might argue against the need for a route which in essence simply loops away from Sustrans Route 1 before rejoining it, the latter has several disadvantages that detract from its functionality for many people.
Derek Wanstall says:
This route needs discussion at the next Cycle Foram Meeting, which will give all members the chance to Cycle or Drive along these narrow country lanes, with blind bends and S.Bends.Visiblity is often not clear due to to these circumstances.
Rest assured I support any actions that make cycling safer to avoid any accidents. However, frequently it is not the cyclist at fault ,but a driver who is impatient, plus many other reasons in association.
Jill Cliff says:
Sounds good. Signs along the main road to direct people off to the safer route is a great idea.
Bob Frost says:
It would be nice to get something worthwhile out of the dreadful accident.
